Currently, Sphere Energy S.A.S and the research group on Efficient Energy Management, Kaí, are working together under a framework agreement with Universidad del Atlántico, in the development of innovation projects related to the production of hydrogen and biogas.
Efficint Energy Management Reserch Group, Kai
This research group emerged in 1999 and was recognized by Colciencias in 2000. It is attached to the Faculty of Engineering of Universidad del Atlántico and is made up of researchers from the Chemical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering programs.
Its lines of research can be summarized as follows:
-
Energy characterisation of the business sector
- Development of models and software for energy management and optimization of production processes.
-
Development of energy management technologies in the business sector.
- Non-conventional energy sources.

Therefore, the application sectors revolve around energy, products and services for the defense and protection of the environment, including sustainable development, advice and consultancy in architecture and engineering and finally the development of related software.
Kaí is considered one of the most outstanding groups at national level in the Energy Efficiency and Management area, getting involved, towards 2014 in the area of non-conventional energy sources (FNCE), developing work and research especially in solar energy, wind and hydrogen. The group is endorsed under category A by Colciencias.
They have more than six books related to renewable and non-conventional energy, as well as more than sixty scientific articles published in journals indexed nationally and internationally.
Gas Natural Renovable
From the use of organic matter from commercial, industrial and agro-industrial activities, through the adjustment and control of the different variables involved in the anaerobic processes of decomposition of such organic matter, it is possible to obtain Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) or biogas.
With two semicontinuous flow bench scale biodigesters, in SPHERE ENERGY S.A.S.’s laboratory the different alternatives of NRG production using residual organic matter are analyzed. Through this process, the variables that affect the development of anaerobic digestion of the selected and prepared material are studied in order to determine optimal operating conditions in NRG production and thus, analyze in more detail the stages that make up this process and control the critical variables involved in this process.
With the above, it seeks to generate an environmentally friendly fuel, which by its production characteristics is considered renewable, allowing its use directly or mixed with conventional natural gas (NG), hydrogen, NG + hydrogen, as well as the use in common operations in which diesel and gasoline are consumed by bi-fuel operations RNG + diesel and RNG + gasoline for partial replacement of these liquid hydrocarbons derived from petroleum.
Due to its compositional characteristics, RNG is a fuel that can be transported and distributed by conventional networks.
Sphere Energy S.A.S, in co-execution with Energy for the Caribbean S.A.S E.S.P and Universidad del Atlántico, participated as executor of the project “Obtaining biogas from the use of organic waste from industrial, commercial and agro-industrial activities in the Department of Atlántico”, in the COLCIENCIAS Call 786 for the registration of projects that aspire to obtain tax benefits for investment in CTeI.
The General Secretary of the Administrative Department of Science, Technology and Innovation-COLCIENCIAS (acronym in spanish), by means of Resolution 1670 of 2018 granted the qualification as a technological development project to the proposal presented and the access to the tax benefit; emphasizing among other aspects, the contribution to the fulfillment of goals established within the Sustainable Development Objectives, especially related to:
- Ensuring universal access to affordable, reliable and modern energy services.
- Significantly increase the ratio of renewable energy in all energy sources.
- Improve technology for modern and sustainable energy service delivery.
-
Reduce the negative per capita environmental impact of cities, including by paying special attention to air quality and the management of municipal and other wastes.
-
Promote the development, dissemination and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies.

Hydrogen
From the electrolysis process that allows hydrogen production in a clean and sustainable way, a renewable fuel alternative is generated, which can be used in combustion processes with the added value of its high calorific power and zero impact on the environment.

With equipment developed on a scale located in the laboratory of Sphere Energy S.A.S, there is a mobile hydrogen generation station, which has the ability to operate under controlled conditions of pressure, temperature and KOH concentration, so that provides a technological solution for industrial applications and heat generation / mechanical power.
Taking into account the physical-chemical characteristics of the hydrogen generated by the mobile station, it can be injected in conventional networks or used in thermal machines (gas engines and turbines) directly or mixed with: conventional natural gas, as well as using it in usual operations in which diesel and gasoline are consumed by bi-fuel operations H2 + diesel and H2 + gasoline for partial replacement of these liquid hydrocarbons derived from petroleum.
Sphere Energy S.A.S promotes energy market diversification through the development of co-generation projects under the pillars of renewable sources, with the aim of producing clean fuels through its projects, which processing drives the dynamism of the circular economy betting on the valorization of waste and the reduction of emissions to the environment.
